A separate RWD41-compatible 8-foot extension cable (the RWD80) is readily available for an even even more comprehensive range. Leak Detection and ProtectionWater damage is the second-top result in of dwelling insurance coverage claims nationwide, and 80 percent of all residence water claims are triggered by plumbing and important appliances. Customer Reviews
This alarm is ridiculously easy to install. It took maybe 15 minutes (tops) to put it under a bathroom sink, including attaching the cable to the drainpipe. It may take longer to snake the cable behind a washing machine, but it's still really easy.
The cable is very sensitive, and the alarm sounds within a couple of seconds of the cable getting wet. When you dry the cable, it takes less than a second for the alarm to go silent. The alarm is LOUD - loud enough to wake you up.
Like a smoke detector, this alarm just sits there silently, doing its thing, and you never know it's working until ... well, until it works. You should probably test it once a year by wrapping a wet cloth around the cable or dunking it in a cup of water.
Having dealt with a water leak in the past I have always been a little nervous about having the water heaters located indoors in our current home. This gadget goes a long way to giving me some peace of mind regarding when the telltale drip of a water heater on it's last legs might begin.
The device is easy to install and uses a 9V battery. The volume of the alarm is loud and annoying enough make you wake up. The cable has a 6 ft leader cable that allows you to mount it higher up on the wall or in another room but the detecting cable itself is only 4 ft long. If you plan on using it in a laundry room or basement I would recommend getting the extensions for the leak detection cable (also available on Amazon). Each unit can be expanded to 240 feet.
If you're dealing with older water heaters, washing machines or basements that are prone to flooding this really is a terrific investment.
