An interconnected method delivers extra warnings in more places in case of fire in your household.Hassle-free-to-Install Alarm Functions a Discreet ProfileThe Silhouette alarm's face plate protrudes much less than half an inch from the ceiling, creating it the most discreet alarm on the market. The encasement containing the sensor and components fits into most round, square, and octagon electrical boxes with three-1/2-inch hole spacing and a depth of at least 2-1/8 inches. The unit is also compatible with double-gang electrical boxes. Do-it-yourselfers will appreciate the pre-stripped wiring harness, which eliminates the will need for a stripper tool, and the tinned strands that boost conductivity and wire nut grip. When the smoke alarm is installed, just make positive the unit receives AC power for 24 hours to completely charge the battery.
Interconnect-able for Improved SafetyFire and consumer authorities advise interconnected alarms for added protection. According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), most Americans really feel they are much more at danger of getting a victim of a tornado than of a home fire. Truly the opposite is accurate. Fires are extra prevalent than any other disaster that strikes a family at household, and can grow to be deadly in minutes.
You have on common much less than three minutes from the time you hear a smoke alarm to escape a fire. The sooner you hear an alarm, the sooner you can get out safely. Smoke alarms that link together so that when one goes off, they all go off, are referred to as interconnected alarms. These alarms supply more warnings in additional locations, giving your household a lot more time to escape a house fire. Homes built immediately after 1993 are needed by constructing codes to have interconnected alarms that are wired into their electrical technique.
Thankfully, Silhouette alarms can be linked to develop an interconnected system, ensuring that when a single alarm sounds, all alarms will sound. Each alarm in the interconnect-able system is equipped with an initiating alarm memory. In the occasion of an emergency, the smoke alarm that first detects a hazard will feature a flashing LED, permitting firefighters to locate the smoke source easily and effectively. All other alarms in the program will sound nevertheless, their LEDs will not flash. This feature is specifically valuable in apartment buildings, condominiums, hotels, and dormitories. Silhouette’s Low-Profile Smoke Alarm will interconnect to a system containing a maximum of 18 Kidde devices, 12 of which can be smoke alarms.

This alarm's Smart Hush feature has the capability of temporarily desensitizing the alarm circuit for up to eight minutes. This feature is to be implemented only when a identified alarm condition, such as smoke from cooking, activates the alarm.
The smoke alarm is desensitized by pushing the Test/Hush button on the smoke alarm cover. If the smoke is not also dense, the alarm will silence instantly. The red LED will illuminate for 1.5 seconds just about every eight seconds though in Hush mode. This indicates that the alarm is in a temporarily desensitized condition.
Moreover, the smoke alarm will automatically reset immediately after around eight minutes and sound the alarm if particles of combustion are nevertheless present. Smart Hush can be made use of repeatedly till the air has been cleared of the condition causing the alarm. Pushing the Test/Hush button on the alarm will end the hush period.

Customer Reviews

Most people know that it is important to replace the batteries in smoke alarms on a regular basis. If nothing else, the shrill beeping of an underpowered unit will cause that. But, did you know that the NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) recommends replacing the detectors every ten years? That is because after that amount of time the probability of failure goes up, and failure during a fire can be catastrophic. This unit will sound an alarm after approximately ten years of service to let you know when it is time to replace it, which is such a good idea I wonder why it isn't in every detector. I suspect the answer is cost, as most detectors are sold by the case to home builders who are looking for the cheapest way to meet code, rather than the best way.
So if your smoke alarms are ten years old (or older), it is time to replace them. When you look around, you'll find that most of them are fairly inexpensive, and very similar to each other. Most of them (like this one) are the ionization type, which uses a very small bit of low level radioactive material to detect the presence of smoke. This type is best for quick, fast burning fires because they tend to put out less visible smoke. The other type use a light with a sensor. When smoke blocks the light from reaching the sensor, the alarm goes off. This type is far less common, and is best for slow, smoldering fires. The light sensors need regular vacuuming, as dust build up on the sensor can cause false alarms. By mixing the two types in a home, or by using units that have dual sensors, you'll be covered for all kinds of fires. Also, both of them will go off regardless of the fire type. The difference is in how quickly they will react to the smoke.
Finally, it is a good idea to buy one that has a hush feature. This is a mechanism that will turn off the alarm for a limited duration (say ten minutes) and then re-arm the detector. This prevents someone from disabling the alarm to silence a false alarm, and then forgetting to re-enable it. This detector has that feature, and it is easy enough to use (though does require a broom handle or similarly long item to reach it).
This smoke alarm has a sleek, low-profile design that looks good. It resembles a tiny version of a high-end bathroom fan (the kind without visible vents). It is very low-profile, and is only about five inches on a side, and a half-inch deep. The square shape fits in better with the rest of the home than a conventional round disc, while still retaining compatibility with the round electrical boxes used for smoke alarms in many homes. It comes with a pre-stripped wiring harness and a plastic ring that it locks to. Installation is easy if you are replacing an existing detector because the box and wiring will be there, and all you have to do is remove the old one, attach the wires together with wire nuts, attach the ring to the ceiling with the included screws, and lock the detector onto the ring. It is a fifteen minute job, and isn't hard. Just make sure the power is off before starting, as there are AC voltages running through the lines.
One of the best features of this detector is that it has a built-in rechargeable battery that will last ten years, the life of the detector. This saves countless trips up the ladder to replace old batteries, and makes It much more likely that the battery will work when it is needed. So, after installing this detector, you can ignore it for ten years other than an occasional cleaning. After the ten years are up, it will alert you to let you know it is time to replace it.

I just got my Kidde smoke alarm and I was a bit dubious of the claims made here, however, I can tell you they are pretty much spot on. If you are not familiar with electrical wiring, then I would recommend having an electrician do the job for you, but if there is a box where you want it, it should be a piece of cake. Please note this cannot be on a circuit with a ground fault interrupter. I would also point out that the only reason this is "low profile" is because it goes into the ceiling. However, this does look nice though. Also keep in mind you cannot paint this. Lastly, you should know that the bracket is mounted and the unit twists off, so if there is ever a problem, you can pull the unit out WITHOUT damaging the ceiling or any finished work. If you are looking for a hard wired smoke detector, look no further. This is a great product, and I highly recommend it.
