This is a nice, loud, shrieking alarm. It does give a short squeak 4 seconds before it goes off, which could be good or bad. The good is that if there is an intruder (and depending on their motive), they would probably change their mind and leave. The bad is that they would become aware of the alarm and might break it in order to silence it and proceed.
One of my first tests was to put it on the other side of the house and see how close I had to be to set the alarm off. When I walked straight towards it, it didn't go off until I was 4-5 feet away. I tried twice with the same result. Then I tried walking across its path. The farthest away that it would recognize me was 18 feet. Tried this 5 times with different variations of movement and 18 feet was the best I could get. That is about as advertized. I don't know how that will change as the batteries drain but presumably it will get shorter so to be prudent, it would probably be best not to count on more than 10-12 feet and place it so that an intruder would walk across it's path rather than towards it.
Another test was to put the alarm three feet in front of a door and open the door. It didn't respond. I waved the door open and closed across a wide arc and nothing happened. But when I moved my body around the door, the alarm went off.
So, (and maybe it should have been obvious since it is an infra-red detector, but) this doesn't really seem to be a "motion" detector, but rather a "heat motion" detector.
I only bought one to see how it worked. It worked okay, especially for the price. I need a couple more detectors and I'll check others first but I might very well end up buying two more of these.

I'll give it 5 stars but I have had it only for a week. So far, so good.
I use it to keep tabs on my dog, she likes to take mini-walks at night an take a wiz on a nice persian carpet. Now with this little gadget, she can't set her paws outside the bed without me knowing and the habit is already BROKEN. I can see where it will come in handy for other areas she tends to hide little "surprises."
For the price, it cannot be beat; my sanity is restored and my little keepsake carpet is happier it is no longer a piddle pad.
